Effect of Residual Gases on Tribo-chemmical Reaction of Metal

Characterictics
  • X-ray photoemission spectroscpy (XPS) equipped with controlled atmosphere friction tester
  • XPS measurement after friction test without air exposure
  • Analyze the tribo-film formation by tribo-chemical reaction.
Equipment
  • X-ray photoemission spectroscpy (XPS) equipped with controlled atmosphere friction tester
  • XPS measurement after friction test without air exposure
XPS
Results
  • Coefficient of friction increased with increasing friction cycles both in vacuum and Ar.
  • In Ar, coefficient of friction rapidly increased from the middle.
Friction results

XPS spectra observed on wear scar
  • In vacuum
     metal oxides worn
     nascent metal exposed
     CoF increased
  • In Ar
Residual gas causes oxidation of worn surfaces.
