Molecular abacus: STM Manipulation of Cyclodextrin Necklace

Characteristics
  • Precise control of molecular movement using polyrotaxane (cyclodextrin necklace)
  • PEG chain acts as a guide rail during the CyD's translational motion.
  • Reproducible and stable operation is possible at room temperature and atmosphere.
Example: Simple shuttling
  • CyDs in the molecular necklace was mechanically pushed by the STM tip along the main chain of PEG.
  • Target CyD moved by the tip-sweep from left to right.
