I received my Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering (1991) from Tokyo Institute of Technology. I joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory in 1991, where I studied photo-induced effects effects in silica glass with synchrotron radiation. From 1996 to 1998, I was on sabbatical leave at Université de Montréal, Canada. I focused on studying generation mechanisms of latent tracks in silica glass with swift heavy ions from this opportunity. From 2001 to 2002, I was a director for electronic and information technology at New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and planned seven new national projects in the field of information technology. I was a Professor at Institute for Molecular science, Okazaki, Japan from 2002 to 2004, Professor of the University of Tokyo from 2005 to 2008. In AIST, I was a research group leader from 2003 to 2010, a director of Research Planning Office for Information Technology and Electronics from 2009 to 2012, deputy director of Electronics and Photonics Research Institute and now I am deputy director of Collaboration Promotion and International Affair Division. Nano-photonics and nanostructure fabrication have been added to my research field since 2003. Recently, we developed palmtop type sensor to detect viruses, e.g. influenza and HBV, HCV, HIV in blood based on nano photonics.
