Nome is famous for Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race, the hardest race in the World.  This red medium-sized sand is composed of mostly garnet with smaller amounts of pyroxene, olivine, magnetite, quartz and so on.  You can see another picture with a white paper as its back.
