poster will be a panel. Posters will be shown during the whole session or
symposium of pertinence.
SYMPOSIA
All symposia are proposed to provide the opportunity to compare
methodological approches on variable type of volcanoes and in variable
socio-economic environments in order to find similarities and differences,
and to develop common strategies.
1 - Eruption Scenarios - Maximum Expected Eruption - Volcanic Hazards
Mapping
The definition of both eruption scenarios and maximum expected event for a
given active volcano as well as the construction of volcanic hazard maps
are preliminary for preparation of emergency plans devoted to volcanic
crisis preparedness and management. These goals can be achieved through a
detailed reconstruction of both the volcanic and deformational history of
the volcano and the behaviour and present state of its magmatic system.
This symposium is soliciting contributions concerned with geological,
volcanological, structural, geochronological and petrological studies aimed
at the definition of the history and present state of a volcanic system.
Contributions aimed at illustrating the issues of volcanic hazards mapping
in relation to both type of volcano and socio-economical environment are
welcomed.
2 - Volcano Monitoring - Eruption Precursors - Alert Levels
A volcanic eruption is preceded by chemical and physical changes in the
state of the volcano related to magma and/or fluid flowage, temperature
redistribution, stress field variations, fractures opening etc. Many active
volcanoes are monitored in order to detect such changes. The interpretation
of these changes in terms of variations of the volcanic system and their
translation in alert levels are among the major tasks for the modern
volcanology.
This symposium is soliciting contributions on the monitoring systems of
active volcanoes, on the significance of chemical and physical changes in
the state of a volcano, on our capability of detecting such changes and on
the possibility of their translation into alert levels. Contributions on
field and experimental studies as well as contributions on methods for
timely data processing are welcomed.
3 - Volcanic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation - Land Management in
Hazardous Areas - Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
The evaluation of the volcanic risk to which an area is exposed is based on
the definition of both volcanic hazard and socio-economic conditions.
Thefore, to accomplish such an evaluation, the integration of data on
volcanic hazards, population, land use, infrastructures and their
vulnerability, etc. is required. GIS is a powerfull tool in linking
together all these data and making them easily usable for all operators in
the field volcanic risk mitigation.
This symposium is soliciting contributions on evaluation of volcanic risk,
development of measures for its mitigation, experiences of land management
in areas exposed to volcanic risk. Contributions on the use of Geographic
Information Systems for evaluation and mitigation of volcanic risk are
warmely solicited.
4 - The Insurance Industry in Hazardous Areas
The insurance industry plays a key role in the functioning of our modern
economies. It allows for the reduction of risks borne by society through
diversification. For this reason, insurers have great concern about how
their activities, dealing with covering potentially catastrophic losses,
may affect their survival in the medium and long run. From an insurance
perspective, the most important features of natural hazards are that they
are unpredictable, unavoidable, and cannot be influenced by human
intervention. The insurance industry is ready to give a contribution in the
identification of an insurance tool for natural catastrophes which should
reduce the costs borne by the State.
This symposium aims at focusing the audience's attention on the problem of
volcanic risk insurance.
5 - Information and Education - The False Alarm Problem
A well-informed public is less likely to panic and will cooperate better
with public authorities during emergencies. Geoscientists, in concert with
authorities and mass media, have to inform and educate the population on
volcanic phenomena, nature of hazards and emergency plans. Sociologists
play an important role in this process as they can define how to spread the
information on volcanic risk. A false alarm is a major problem from a
socio-economical point of view.
This symposium is soliciting contributions from sociologists,
volcanologists, mass media, civil authorities etc. on methodologies to
approach the problem and on experiences of information and education in
areas exposed to volcanic hazards. Contributions on the false alarm problem
are also solicited.
6 - Principles and Structure of Emergency Plans - Relationships Among
the Actors During Preparation and Management of a Volcanic Crisis -
Experiences in Volcanic Crisis Management
Construction of an emergency plan as well as preparation and management of
a volcanic crisis are very complex processes which need the cooperation of
specialists in many fields.
This symposium is intend to a) illustrate principles and structures of
emergency plans, constructed for variety of volcanoes located in different
socio-economical environments; b) discuss the relationships among the
actors during preparation and management of a volcanic crisis and c)
compare experiences in volcanic crisis management.
Volcanologists, sociologists, land managers and civil authorities are
solicited to give their contribution on the topics of the symposium.
POST-MEETING FIELD EXCURSION
A 3-day post-meeting field excursion titled "Volcanic hazards and risk in
the Parthenopean Megacity" will be held from July 5 to 7.. The excursion
will be devoted at illustrating the major volcanological, sociological and
urban features of the Parthenopean Megacity built upon the Campi Flegrei
Restless Caldera and the Somma-Vesuvius Volcano.
Participants will be transfered by bus from Ercolano to the hotel which
will be the base for the entire excursion, on Saturday, July 4. The
excursion will end on Wednesday, 7 July, in the afternoon. Participants
will be driven to the airport and main train stations of Naples.
Cost is Lit 650,000. This covers 3 nights in twin-share hotel
accommodation, transport, all meals (including wine), an excursion
guidebook and beverages in the field.
ABSTRACTS
Abstracts have to be submitted not later than April 30, in English.
Late submissions will not be scheduled for presentation and will not be
included in the Abstract Volume. The Scientific Committee will be
responsible for the acceptance of all submitted papers. Participants will
be notified by May 31 whether their paper has been accepted for poster or
oral presentation. Registrants are asked to indicate on the Abstract Form
enclosed with this circular, the chosen topic of their proposed
presentation and their preference for poster or oral presentation.
Abstracts must be sent to the Secretariat by electronic mail as attached
files. Standard language is English. Files are accepted in Word97 for
Windows95 or Winword for Mac. No pictures must be included in the
abstracts. For further details, see sample abstract.
MEETING PRODUCTS
A volume including selected papers presented at the Meeting will be
published and distributed to all participants. The publication of a volume
aimed at showing the state of art of each topic of the workshops is also
planned.
