- 2000 Eruption of Miyakejima Volcano
- Observation on
September 1 from a helicopter
In the early morning of Sept. 1, 2000, we conducted the observation
and SO2 measurement of erupting ash cloud and also the observation
of the ash distribution on land from a helicopter of Japan Self-defense
Force. From the COSPEC measurement, emission of SO2 was estimated
to be about 3000 ton/day.

One week after the initiation of volcanic eruptions, we established
two stations for continuous EDM measurements to make real time
monitoring of ongoing ground deformation at the southwestern
flank of Usu volcano.

At the Abuta area of the southwestern slope of Usu volcano, significant
ground deformations were proceeding after the initiation of eruption
on March 31.

Photographs of emerging ash clouds are taken from some places
in the early April.

I had three opt unities to get on board helicopters of Japan
Self-defense Force to observe the eruptions of Usu volcano. Photos
are taken on April 7 and 14.
- JAMSTEC KR99-12 cruise in South Pacific, Dec.1999−Jan.2000
I had an opportunity to join the JAMSTEC KR99-12 cruise using
R/V KAIREI. We departed Tahiti on Jan. 3 and conducted researches
of submarine volcanoes along the Cook-Gilbert Island chain and
arrived at Majuro atoll of Marshall Islands.
