Professional Overview

Research background is in electrical engineering. Professional career this year has been devoted to research on integration of renewable energy into power systems as follows:

Load management: It has been considered that a large number of small scale and appliance loads are controlled for demand and supply balance (frequency regulation), peak demand curtailment, and elimination of local network congestion in electric power systems. The subject of the load management is limited to loads which have a certain degree of flexibility in the power consumption profile under a restriction to maintain the energy consumption required during a certain period. These controllable loads are the loads with thermal inertia such as electric water heaters, air conditioners, and refrigerators, and the loads with energy storage, such as future plug-in hybrid vehicles. The control algorithm has been proposed and the validity has been analyzed using the numerical simulation.

Voltage regulation in distribution systems: Investigation of an effective voltage control scheme by reactive power from dispersed generators and tap control of transformers. Comparing the proposed cooperative control with the conventional independent control using an experimental simulator. It has been confirmed experimentally that the voltage regulation ability becomes higher with the cooperative control than that with the independent control.

Installed electrical energy storage systems

Converters with SiC Devices: two kinds of converters (inverters with transformer and transformerless inverters) with some pairs of semiconductor devices (Si-IGBT + Si-PND, SiC-IGBT + SiC-PND, and SiC-FET + SiC-SBD) have been designed and compared with each other in respect of estimated total losses and weight. Inverters with SiC devices for residential dispersed generators have been also estimated. (2003-2005)

Research on a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) co-generation system in residential dwellings. The characteristics of a 1-kW class PEFC were investigated experimentally. (2002-2003)

Improvement of superconducting solenoid using Bi2223/Ag tape by ferromagnetic disks. The effect was investigated quantitatively in simulation analyses, and confirmed experimentally. (1998-2002)

For the multilayer high-Tc superconducting power transmission cable, a method to decide the twist pitch angles of the superconducting tapes in order to prevent the current distribution imbalance was developed. This method was utilized for the research on cable in Fujikura Ltd. (1999-2001)

Force-Balanced Coils (FBC) applied to the magnetic field coils of a nuclear fusion reactor or SMES were developed. The design method of FBC to prevent overturning moment was developed. A small-size tokamak device with FBC was manufactured and the generated plasma was investigated. Furthermore, trial FBC-SMES with NbTi wires was manufactured and it generated about 2 T. (1994-1999)

Force-balanced coils and plasma in TODOROKI-I

Superconducting magnets need protection systems, which discharge their storage energy into dump resistors in order to prevent them from damage during quench. For the protection circuit of huge superconducting magnets, a dump resistor with stainless steel wire ropes and a water-cooled fuse breaker was proposed. (1993-1995)
