Fifth Asian Geothermal Symposium
-Exploration and Exploitation of Geothermal Resources as Dispersive-type Energy-
First Announcement

  to Preliminary Report
to Japanese Version
Dear potential participants,

Geothermal resource is abundant in Asia and one of the most prospective energy sources expanded to the future in Asia, as has been proven by 16 % of electricity supply in the Philippines and 4 % of electricity supply in Indonesia.  Geothermal energy is also one of the cleanest energy in carbon dioxide emission and the promotion of its development will directly contribute to the global environmental issue in Asia as a center for rapidly increasing energy demands in the world.  The promotion of the direct use of geothermal energy without power generation will also bring us the same effect.  However, geothermal developments are not straightforwardly proceeding in Asia except for a few specific countries, probably due to the lack of technical and economical experiences. One of breakthroughs to this dilemma is to place a forum for information exchange among Asian countries, to accelerate international cooperation on technical and economical assistances and to expand a cooperation network of geothermal developments throughout Asia.

The Fifth Asian Geothermal Symposium will be held at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The theme of the symposium is “Exploration and Exploitation of Geothermal Resources as Dispersive-type Energy” to seek out optimum geothermal development styles for Asia including off grid-type and/or dispersive-type geothermal power development in remote islands or mountainous areas and various direct uses of geothermal energy. Malaysia has not yet geothermal power plants, but there are potential geothermal areas and Malaysia is one of the candidates intends to develop geothermal resources so that a number of potential geothermal participants could join there and widespread information exchanges and discussions for future geothermal developments would be expected.

Note that Asian Geothermal Symposium has been annually held since 1998, aiming at information exchange on geothermal resource developments in Asia and promoting international cooperation. Among past four symposiums, the earlier three had been held as a side meeting of the Annual Session of the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP), held at Subic in the Philippines, Hanoi in Viet Num and Bangkok in Thailand, respectively. The fourth symposium was held in Indonesia, separated from CCOP meeting but coupled with the Open Seminar for Indonesia-Japan bilateral project “Research Cooperation Project on the Exploration of Small-scale Geothermal Resources in the Eastern Part of Indonesia (ESSEI)”. The Fifth Asian Geothermal Symposium will also be independent from the CCOP Annual Session, successively sponsored by Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment (GREEN, AIST), while the past four symposiums were sponsored by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). We have pleasure in extending our cordial invitation to this Symposium, to potential participants who has keen interests in geothermal development in Asia, and to potential companies, governmental bodies and research institutes that are working in researches, developments and utilities on geothermal energy in Asia.
